Our natural soy wax Citronella candles are back for summer with us and our wonderful stockist Peace with the Wild! We have three variations of wonderfully summery scents to fragrance your sunny memories this summer; Meadow, Herb Garden and Hedgerow. Read on to find out more about why citronella is such a popular summer scent and the three variations that we have available.
Why Citronella Candles?
Historically, Citronella has been chosen as a popular summer scent because of its association with repelling insects. Many believe that citronella can work as a powerful insect repellent and so, having a citronella candle burning whilst sitting outside on those balmy summer evenings may reduce the irritation of all those buzzy insects trying to pilfer your glass of wine (or whatever evening drink you prefer!).
Another reason that this powerful scent is so popular for summer is its association with both relaxation and mental stimulation. Unlike other essential oils that usually provide one or other of these effects, Citronella is thought to do both, its effect varying from person to person. Therefore, Citronella candles are perfect for burning all through the day too achieve that relaxed summer state of mind, without sending you all the way to sleep!
Our Blends
Which of our three scent combinations you choose will also effect whether your citronella candles have a more relaxing or a more awakening affect. All of our fragrances are created using natural essential oils and no synthetics, meaning that you can reap all the benefits of all of the essential oils in our tea lights.
- Meadow – Citronella, Lavender & Patchouli, for a more relaxing vibe. Lavender is well-known for it’s calming and relaxing properties, whilst Patchouli is a lesser known essential oil that has been associated with similar benefits. Patchouli is thought not only to ease feelings of stress and anxiety, but also to lift the mood, perfect for a stress-free summer!
- Herb Garden – Citronella & Thyme, for an uplifting feel. Thyme has a wonderful scent that is thought to help raise mood and even spark feelings of happiness and satisfaction, making it excellent for a summer focused on feelings of gratitude and an appreciation for wherever you are in life right now.
- Hedgerow – Citronella, Peppermint & Lemongrass, for an awakening effect. Peppermint is known for its association with mental awakening and focus, helping to clear brain fog and focus on the present moment, whilst relaxing muscular tension. Like Citronella itself, Peppermint relaxes without being stimulating feelings of sleepiness. Lemongrass again is known to relax and soothe, but it’s zingy, uplifting scent stops it from lulling you to sleep, making this blend perfect for a calm summer of living in the moment.
All of our candles are also made of natural soy wax. Soy wax is made from soybeans, making it an entirely natural product that is far better for the environment than its cheaper and more commonly used counterpart, paraffin wax, which is made from crude oil. Because it is made from soybeans, soy wax is and entirely renewable and biodegradable source. Furthermore, soy wax is clean-burning meaning that it doesn’t release any nasty gases or soot when it’s burned, meaning there will be no greasy black marks on walls or on the candle containers themselves. Although these positives mean that soy wax is more expensive than paraffin wax and thus, so are the candles, soy wax has the added bonus of burning slower than paraffin wax! Therefore, you will find that you will get more use out of one soy candle than you would one paraffin candle.
Our Commitment to the Environment
There’s also something super special about these Citronella candles that I have so far failed to mention… As well as soy wax they are made from a small amount of the waste oils, butter and waxes that are produced when we are making our other skincare and wellness products! As far as we’re aware, this makes our Citronella candles completely unique on the market and is a massive up cycling win for us as an eco-friendly small business. We’re immensely grateful to our candle making collaborators, Tarn Replenish, for helping us to make this happen.
Furthermore, our candles are also part of our returns scheme. If your candle containers are not damaged or dented, you can fill out the form on the returns page, to return them to us to be cleaned and reused. As always, our packaging is also plastic-free, recyclable and reusable.
The Citronella candles are also one of our charity products, so 8.5% of profits from these candles will go towards the World Land Trust and the Lancashire, Manchester & North Merseyside Wildlife Trust. Both of these are fantastic charities that aim to help protect our wildlife for future generations. The World Land Trust works to create reserves and provide protection for the world’s most significant and threatened habitats. Meanwhile, the Wildlife Trust is a much more local organisation to us at Valley Mist that work at a grass roots level to protect our local wildlife; caring for nature reserves, educating children about the environment, and replenishing natural habitats, among other things.
