Witch Hazel for Skin: What Does It Do and Who Is It Best For?

Witch hazel is one of those traditional botanical ingredients that many of us recognise, even if we are not entirely sure what it does.

It is often associated with oily, combination and blemish-prone skin, but its usefulness extends beyond simply “clearing spots.” Used in a well-formulated skincare product, witch hazel can help skin feel refreshed, reduce the appearance of excess oil and leave the complexion looking more balanced.

In this journal post, we explore what witch hazel is, why it is used in skincare and how it features in our Valley Mist Toner for Combination Skin.

What Is Witch Hazel?

Witch hazel, or Hamamelis virginiana, is a flowering shrub traditionally associated with North America, although related species are also found in parts of Asia.

It is particularly distinctive when in flower. Its slender yellow petals appear along otherwise bare branches during the colder months, giving the plant its unusual, almost spidery appearance.

Unlike many floral waters, witch hazel is not primarily valued for its flowers. The leaves, bark and twigs contain naturally occurring plant compounds, including tannins, which are responsible for many of the qualities associated with witch hazel in skincare.

These parts of the plant can be distilled to create witch hazel water, which is then incorporated into toners and other facial products.

At Valley Mist, we work carefully to source our ingredients as responsibly and as locally as is practical. The witch hazel used in our formulation is sourced from France and distilled here in the UK.

What Are the Benefits of Witch Hazel for Skin?

It can help oily or combination skin feel more balanced

Witch hazel is naturally astringent. This means it can help remove the sensation of excess surface oil and leave the skin feeling fresh and lightly toned.

For this reason, it is particularly popular with people whose skin becomes oily through the forehead, nose and chin while remaining normal or drier elsewhere.

Astringent does not mean that witch hazel permanently shrinks or closes pores. Pores do not open and close in that way. However, by helping to remove excess oil and residue from the skin’s surface, witch hazel can temporarily make enlarged or congested-looking pores appear less noticeable.

It offers a refreshing toning step

A well-formulated witch hazel toner can provide a clean, refreshed feeling without the harshness traditionally associated with old-fashioned, high-alcohol facial tonics.

Our Valley Mist toner is alcohol-free and combines witch hazel water with gentle cleansing and hydrating ingredients. This makes it suitable for everyday use as part of a balanced skincare routine rather than as an aggressive treatment intended to dry the skin out.

It contains naturally occurring plant compounds

Witch hazel contains tannins and other antioxidant plant compounds. These help explain its long history of use in traditional skincare preparations.

However, witch hazel is not a treatment for acne, eczema, psoriasis or other medical skin conditions. While some people find it calming and refreshing, very reactive or compromised skin may find astringent ingredients less comfortable.

As with all skincare, the complete formula matters more than the reputation of one individual ingredient.

Is Witch Hazel Suitable for Sensitive Skin?

This depends on both the formulation and the individual.

Some traditional witch hazel products contain a high proportion of alcohol, which can feel drying or irritating. Valley Mist Toner for Combination Skin is formulated without alcohol and is designed to cleanse, balance and hydrate without leaving the skin feeling stripped.

Even so, witch hazel may not be the best choice for everyone. Very dry, highly reactive or sensitised skin may prefer our gentler Toner for Normal to Dry Skin.

Trying a smaller size first can be a helpful way to see how your skin responds before committing to a full-sized bottle.

Why Is Witch Hazel Used in Our Toner for Combination Skin?

Our Witch Hazel & Lemon Toner for Combination Skin is a 3-in-1 formula created to cleanse, balance and hydrate.

It combines witch hazel flower water with lemon and geranium essential oils to create a light, refreshing toner for skin that can feel oily in some areas and normal or drier in others.

The formula can be used to:

  • Remove everyday makeup, SPF and surface impurities
  • Refresh the skin after cleansing
  • Help lift excess surface oil
  • Support the skin’s natural pH balance
  • Leave a light layer of hydration behind

Although we previously called this product a Micellar Water & Toner, it is now named simply Toner.

The formula still performs the same multifunctional role. It can be used as a gentle cleansing water, as a second cleansing step or as a traditional toner after washing the face.

How to Use Witch Hazel Toner

Apply the toner to a reusable facial pad and gently sweep it across the face and neck.

It can be used:

  • In the morning to refresh the skin
  • In the evening to remove light makeup, SPF and daily impurities
  • After cleansing to remove any remaining residue
  • Before applying facial oil, serum or moisturiser

There is no need to rinse it away.

When removing eye makeup, use a separate pad and work gently around the eye area. Waterproof mascara may require a little more product and additional time to dissolve.

Which Valley Mist Toner Is Right for My Skin?

We currently make three facial toners, each created for a different general skin type.

Witch Hazel & Lemon Toner for Combination Skin

A refreshing alcohol-free toner with witch hazel, lemon and geranium. Best suited to combination skin or those who experience oiliness through the central areas of the face.

Tea Tree, Juniper & Lemongrass Toner for Oily Skin

Designed for oilier and blemish-prone complexions, with tea tree water and a fresh blend of juniper and lemongrass essential oils.

Neroli & Lavender Toner for Normal to Dry Skin

A softer choice for normal, dry or more delicate-feeling skin, made with lavender water, neroli and lavender essential oils.

All three are multifunctional 3-in-1 formulas that cleanse, balance and hydrate.

Smaller 30ml bottles are also available, making it easier to try a formula before choosing the full size.

A More Thoughtful Approach to Witch Hazel

Witch hazel can be a useful botanical ingredient, particularly for combination skin, but stronger is not always better.

We believe the best toner should leave the skin feeling clean and refreshed without making it feel tight, dry or uncomfortable. That is why our witch hazel toner is alcohol-free and balanced with glycerin and gentle cleansing ingredients.

It is not designed to strip away every trace of natural oil or promise overnight solutions for blemishes. Instead, it offers a simple, practical step for skin that benefits from a little extra freshness and balance.
