You may have noticed that all of Valley Mist's sustainable lip balms contain cocoa butter — and you might be wondering why this is an ingredient we are quite so fond of… Or even if you weren't, hopefully you're feeling at least a little curious now! This post will discuss all of the amazing benefits of cocoa butter lip balm and why we're proud to have it making up such a high percentage of our lip balm ingredients (45% in many of our vegan lip balms!).
Why Cocoa Butter?
So, why do we choose cocoa butter when there are so many alternatives we could use? Cocoa seed butter is a 100% natural substance derived from the cocoa bean — yes, the very same thing used to make chocolate! As a result, even without being scented with essential oils, our cocoa butter lip balms already possess a delightfully light, chocolatey scent. And who doesn't love chocolate? Our Peppermint Value Lip Balm even tastes quite a lot like mint choc chip — brilliant news for all the mint chocolate lovers out there.
Organic Cocoa Butter
All of our cocoa butter is also organic, helping to contribute to sustainable farming methods that promote biodiversity worldwide. It's a small detail that matters to us — because the ingredients we choose reflect the values we hold.
Loaded with Vitamin E
Not only is cocoa butter an excellent natural, organic, and vegan alternative to many synthetic substances — like petroleum, which often forms the base of conventional lip balms — but it is also naturally loaded with Vitamin E. Vitamin E helps to maintain healthy skin, making cocoa butter lip balm an excellent option for dry or chapped lips in winter, or lips that have seen a little too much sun in summer.
Cocoa butter is fat-soluble, meaning it is able to penetrate the layers of your skin, moisturising and forming a protective barrier to nourish your smile. And there's no reason to limit it to your lips — many of our customers use their cocoa butter lip balm as a cuticle treatment or spot balm for dry skin anywhere on the body, with great results.
Rich in Antioxidants
'Antioxidants' — a word often thrown around and usually considered positive, but if you asked most people what it actually meant, you'd probably get something like "I'm not really sure, but I think they're good for you…" Well, cocoa butter is full of them — and in the context of lip balm, this is particularly brilliant. Antioxidants prevent the product from oxidising and going off, acting as a natural preservative. This allows us to keep our cocoa butter lip balms free from parabens and other petroleum-based compounds. Natural preservation, naturally.
Luxurious Application Texture
Last but not least — cocoa butter has a wonderfully luxurious application texture. Like coconut oil, it starts quite solid but melts as it warms. This makes it perfect for a lip balm: holding its shape in the container, then melting lavishly as you apply it. It's one of those small sensory details that turns a functional product into a genuine pleasure to use.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of cocoa butter lip balm?
Cocoa butter lip balm is naturally rich in Vitamin E and antioxidants, deeply moisturising, and forms a protective barrier on the lips. It's fat-soluble, meaning it penetrates the skin rather than just sitting on the surface, and its natural antioxidant properties mean it acts as a preservative — keeping the formula free from parabens.
Is cocoa butter lip balm good for dry lips?
Yes — it's one of the best natural ingredients for dry, chapped lips. The high fat content in cocoa butter penetrates the skin to moisturise deeply, while forming a protective barrier to lock that moisture in. Valley Mist lip balms contain up to 45% organic cocoa seed butter.
Is Valley Mist cocoa butter organic?
Yes — all Valley Mist lip balms use certified organic cocoa seed butter, supporting sustainable farming methods and biodiversity.
Are Valley Mist cocoa butter lip balms vegan?
We offer both original and fully vegan options. Our vegan range contains no animal-derived ingredients and is housed in biodegradable, plastic-free paperboard tubes.
Why do Valley Mist lip balms smell like chocolate?
Cocoa seed butter naturally carries a light, chocolatey scent — it comes from the cocoa bean itself, with no artificial fragrance added. Our Peppermint lip balm in particular has been described as tasting like mint choc chip!
